Chapter 11
And I never will. He says, And I never will. Really, it’s enough to make a girl want to read his diary. But no, not a girl like me. I left it right under my pillow. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t tempting, though. I mean, God, I even peeked just a little, but when I flipped it open, I only got this page onto which he’d pasted a letter from his Asian pen pal.
But did I go back and look for more? No. No, I didn’t. And that’s what makes all the difference.
“Alyssa, just watch where you’re—” Sammie says in a warning tone. But she’s too late.
It might have been perfectly okay if we weren’t trekking up a very steep sort of hill, but it’s just too bad—we are. And I’ve just fallen over backwards and started sliding down the hill.
“Oh, God,” I say, grimacing as my back grates against rocks, sticks, and whatever else is on the ground. I flail my arms and legs around, trying to get a grip. Seriously it’s THAT steep, so steep that I can’t even fall over without getting more than I bargained for. Not that I usually intend to fall over, but you know, it would just be nice if before I did, I knew what I’d be in for.
Because what I don’t want to be in for is what I’m getting. And then, as if it can’t get any worse (as if my hair getting tangled with bark, leaves, and dirt isn’t bad enough), I run into someone, and he falls backwards too. It isn’t even someone nice who’d understand. No. It’s Rafe’s wonder boy, Tracy Prescott.
“Oof,” Tracy exclaims as I crash land on his feet, knocking him on his ass, too—except Tracy doesn’t slide. He plants his hands down firmly on the ground and stops us both from sliding any further. He glares at me. “What the freaking hell, you loser!?” he says in a high-pitched voice.
Um. Okay. Well that isn’t a very nice thing to say especially since I didn’t exactly do it on purpose. Also, that thing Rafe said the other night, the thing about Tracy’s voice being totally sexy? Um, so not. He sounds like he hasn’t reached puberty yet, and his voice is so completely different from Rick’s, which is rich and deep and unintentionally breathy. Rick has a way sexy voice (not that I’m biased at all. I’m the least biased person when it comes to Rick). Tracy’s just doesn’t compare, and from the sound of it, it never will.
I pull myself up and hold out a hand for him. “Sorry,” I say, offering a small smile, which he rolls his eyes at and ignores—along with my hand. He just pulls himself up and walks around me. He doesn’t give me a second glance. To add insult to injury, Rafe sees this and runs right after him, offering his services.
Tracy looks at him, and then barely offers him a second glance before he hands over his backpack without so much as a thank you.
